Welluvia's Spring TV Guide

Fall is when all the good shows come out in the northern hemisphere, so for us, that means they land on our TV's in spring. Today we're looking at our favourite binge-worthy programs that are currently airing, coming out in the coming months or some of our favourites that recently came out.

On Becoming a God in Central Florida

(Season 1, Showtime)

Anything Kirsten Dunst and I'm there. At the end of last year this strange but incredible series on Showtime came out, and I watched it religiously with my sister every week. Dunst plays Krystal Stubbs, a minimum wage employee at a waterpark who is looking for a better life. To reach her goal, she lies, cheats and cons her way up the ranks of Founders American Merchandise (FAM), a cultish pyramid scheme that ruined her family in the first place. The show genre warps from comedy to drama, then the surreal and sometimes even thriller. The dialogue and scenes are punchy and fun and leave you wanting to watch one episode after another.

Baby

(Season 3, Netflix)

Initially, when I saw the trailer to this Netflix series a few years ago, I wasn't very interested. After being prompted by a few friends, I'm glad I sat down to watch and quickly became hooked. Following the 'Baby Squillo' case from 2013 which involved affluent high school students becoming involved in an underage prostitution ring, Baby follows the story of Chiara and Ludo as they navigate their elite lives while living a scandalous and secret nightlife. A stellar cast, incredible score (that is impossible to find online), beautiful cinematography and an extremely compelling plot.

We Are Who We Are

(Limited Series, HBO)

Luca Guadagnino's films are some of my favourites (I Am Love anyone?) and I was very excited last year to hear he was creating a series for HBO. The series follows two American kids who live on a U.S. military base in Italy as they explore friendship, first love, identity, and all the messy exhilaration and anguish of being a teenager. A Devonte Hynes score (eerily similar to Ryuichi Sakamoto's works which were originally announced to score the show…), beautiful Italian landscapes and incredible acting, all make the show well worth the watch. The series is currently on episode 5 with new episodes every Monday.

The Undoing

(Limited Series, HBO)

Nicole Kidman's foray into the small screen with Big Little Lies was incredible to see, and a new show on HBO looks as if it will continue her streak. Based on the bestseller 'You Should've Known' by Jean Hanff Korelitz, the series follows a therapist's life as it unravels after she learns that her husband might be responsible for a widespread disaster. It is airing on HBO from the 25th October.

Ratched

(Season 1, Netflix)

A deep dive into some of the campy side of TV there is to offer, Ratched follows a young nurse at a mental institution that becomes bitter before turning into a full-fledged monster to her patients. I have a love-hate relationship with Ryan Murphy, so was a bit apprehensive about watching this at first; however, I'm glad I did. Featuring an intriguing storyline, marvellous styling and great acting (particularly from Sarah Paulson), the show is well worth the watch for something a bit more fun.
