Using LED Light Therapy to Improve Our Skin


Different kinds of light can have a myriad of benefits for our mind, body and spirit. Other than the benefits we get from soaking up the sun rays, there is also a whole world of non-UV LED light therapies we can harness to benefit a wide variety of skin concerns.

Recently I was getting a microdermabrasion treatment and my dermatologist recommended I book in for a Yellow LED light therapy session to calm down some of the irritated parts of my skin, and prevent it from scarring. I have tried several sorts of LED therapies in the past, but never entirely knew exactly what it was that they were targeting or what some of the research behind it was.

So naturally, after I booked in for my Yellow Light Therapy session, I investigated more in-depth to share on Welluvia.

 
 

 

What is LED Light Therapy?

LED Therapy, also known as light-emitting diode therapy, is a variety of skincare treatments we can use that utilise a range of wavelengths of light, in different colours, for various problems. Initially developed by NASA for plant growth experimentation, they later found it had promising results as a wound healing treatment. Fast forward to now and LED light therapy is commonly found at most cosmetic clinics, and even more accessible in in-home devices on the market. Using LED wavelengths, the treatment can assist in a broad range of issues, from treating acne, reducing inflammation and promoting anti-aging effects on the skin.

The Different Lights and Their Benefits on Our Skin

Naturally, the different coloured lights within LED light therapy each have their own individual benefits. We’ve discussed our top four LED light therapy colours and their main benefits. It’s essential to note that there is a crossover of the benefits of a variety of colours.

Yellow Light - Circulation

Yellow light is also known as the ‘botox of wavelengths’. Working by stimulating the rejuvenation process within the cells to improve the density of the skin. It has also shown to:

  • Rejuvenate and brighten the complexion

  • Reduce redness and swelling

  • Assist with lymphatic drainage to activate toxin elimination

  • Energise the cells of the skin and stimulate lymphocyte production

  • Build collagen and reduce wrinkles

  • Encourage circulation while boosting the bodies immune system defence.

Blue Light - Calming, Anti-Inflammatory, Anti-Acne

Blue light is the go-to treatment for people with congested and acne-prone skin. Sebaceous glands can sometimes become overactive, leading to oily skin or acne. This is what blue light therapy predominately targets. Blue light destroys and sterilises acne bacteria, and treats excess oil within the skin.

Red Light - Inflammation & Anti-Aging 

Red Light therapy is used to treat the epidermis of the skin. Once the light is applied to the skin, the epidermis absorbs it and stimulates collagen proteins. This same practice can reduce inflammation and improve circulation of the skin. Red light therapy:

  • Stimulates fibroblasts in the skin, producing collagen and elastin

  • Provides essential energy for cellular renewal

  • Improves the quality and strength of the skin

  • Increases plumpness which reduces fine lines and wrinkles while tightening and firming the skin

  • Assists with lymphatic drainage

  • Stimulates the production of ATP

  • Restores overall healthy cell function

Green Light - Pigmentation 

Green Light therapy is essential for those trying to combat problems with pigmentation. Among its many benefits, green light therapy:

  • Regulates melanin and oil production

  • Controls hyperpigmentation and reduces general pigmentation

  • Assists with fading age spots, brown spots and freckles

  • Stimulates cellular growth and healing

 

 

I’ve had numerous sessions of varying light therapies over the years, but mainly under the recommendation of my dermatologist. I’ve also tried a few of those at-home light therapy devices that are super easy to use, but without the knowledge on what you’re treating, they can be rather pointless.

I much prefer attending an appointment in a clinic rather than using the products at home as you know that you’re getting the correct treatment for your skin, and the tips and suggestions your dermatologist gives you are invaluable.
